Chennai: The National Human Rights Commission of India (NHRC) on Monday issued notices to the Chief Secretary, Government of Tamil Nadu calling for a factual report within two weeks over a reported suicide case by an indebted farmer following insult and torture by police and a financial firm.

As per ANI, a farmer in Ariyalur district of Tamil Nadu committed suicide on Friday after his tractor was impounded by a private financing agency for non-payment of dues.

It is nothing new that a farmer has committed suicide for failing to pay his debts. This is the grim reality of agriculture sector in India.

A few days back, a farmer, who owes Rs 1.3 lakh to a bank for a loan he took for a tractor, was beaten black and blue by the police and loan recovery agents in Tamil Nadu's Thanjavur district.
