Chennai: A Madurai report said election authorities on Tuesday seized 9,940 mobile phones worth Rs 76 lakh from a container lorry when they were being transported without valid documents at nearby Balasingapuram.
District Collector Veeraraghavrao received a tip-off, rushed to the spot and checked the vehicle. As the driver failed to produce documents to support his claim that the phones were meant for sale, they were seized.
Later, the documents related to the seized items were e-mailed to the officials, who released the lorry.
The phones were being transported from SIPCOT (State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu) at Manamadurai to Andhra Pradesh, officials said.
The collector said 713 cases of violation of election code of conduct had been registered the district.
