Chennai: Tamil Nadu Government issued an order merging the Chennai Suburban and City commissionerates to form a Greater Chennai Police Commissionerate.

Following the merger, Greater Chennai Police Commissionerate would be divided into North, South, Central and West zones, a government release here said on Wednesday.

At a function in the Secretariat on Wednesday, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa presented the G.O to Commissioner of Police J K Tripathy.

During the earlier AIADMK regime, the Chennai city police and erstwhile Chengalpattu east district were merged to form the Greater Chennai City Police in April 2005. However, in 2008, under the DMK regime, the city`s outskirts were put under a separate Chennai Suburban Police Commissionerate.

In the AIADMK Government`s budget presented earlier this month, Finance Minister O Pannerselvam earlier had announced the decision to revert back to the system of a single commissionerate for better administration.
