Chennai: Madras High Court Saturday adjourned to Apr11
hearing on a criminal original plea filed by an Independent
seeking a direction to police to register a case against an
AIADMK candidate for allegedly claiming to have a B.A Degree.

When the matter came up before Justice C.T.Selvam, the
Government Advocate took notice and the case was posted for
further hearing.

In his petition, K Kuppan, independent candidate of
Thiruvottiyur constituency, alleged that AIADMK Candidate
K.Kuppan, son of Kannu, in his nomination claimed that he
completed his B.A Degree from University of Madras in 2010.

Being resident of the area for decades, he knew that Kuppan
did not have any proper schooling and information furnished by
him in his nomination and affidavit that he was a BA degree
holder was false, the petitioner alleged.

Mentioning this in advertising materials for canavassing
votes was with a view to influencing voters that he
was an educated candidate, the petitioner contended.

In another plea, the petitioner said the AIADMK candidate
"deliberately publishing false statement of facts in respect
of his educational qualification as if he is a B.A.degree
holder and doing L.L.B, which is capable of affecting the very
result of the election, would squarely amount to an offence
under IPC section 171(F) (punishment for undue influence or
personation at an election) and 171 (G) (false statement in
connection with an election).

Both petitions will come up for hearing next week.
