Chennai: Normal life was badly hit in
coastal areas of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry following heavy
rains as Met officials predict more downpour in the next 24
hours in the region.
"A low pressure area still persists over west central and
adjoining South West bay off south Andhra Pradesh and North
Tamil Nadu coast. Under its influence, heavy rain is expected
over coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry in the next 24 hours,
starting 8.30 AM today," a Met official said.
Fishermen have been warned not to venture out to sea as
strong northwesterly winds, with speed between 45-55 kmph are
likely to blow along off north Tamil Nadu and Puducherry
South Tamil Nadu coast was also likely to experience
strong winds from westerly direction with speed occasionally
touching 45-55 kmph, the officials said.
Meanwhile, normal life was hit in Chennai and its suburbs
following incessant rains and strong winds since yesterday.
Several areas were under knee-deep water while low-lying
areas in north Chennai were inundated as the city recorded 200
mm of rain in last 24 hours ending eight am today.
Kanchipuram and Niligiris districts registered the
maximum amount of rainfall at 500 mm.
