Ahmedabad: States are demanding setting
up of more National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT)
centres, but for that they have to provide infrastructure and
finances, Union Textile Minister Dayanidhi Maran said on Tuesday.

Any state which wants a new NIFT centre should provide
ample land, construct the building and give Rs 50 crore for
running the administration, he said.

Speaking at a function in NIFT Gandhinagar, the
minister said, the institute has designed school uniforms and
saree of `aanganwadi` workers among other things, and it gets
ample cooperation from the state government. It`s a model
centre for other states.

He appealed to Chief Minister Narendra Modi, who was
present at the function, to give additional land for expansion
of the centre.

However, Modi suggested opening of NIFT centres in
other districts of the state. "New centres of NIFT may be
opened in Vadodara, Surat, Bhavnagar and Jamnagar," he said.

Referring to gems and jewellery designing facility
offered at NIFT Gandhinagar, a unique feature among all its
centres, Modi said Gujarat has all the potential to grow
rapidly in the sector.
