Madurai: The Vigilance and Anti-Corruption on Thursday informed Madurai Bench of the Madras high Court that the two IAS Officers, who were booked for alleged corruption in the illegal granite quarrying case, had grossly abused their position with a malafide intention to favour PRP Exports.
N Mathivanan and C Kamaraj were booked by sleuths of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption, who conducted raids across 34 places in the state on September 15.
Submitting their report in a plea filed by one V.Anbalagan, who had sought CBI probe into illegal quarrying, ADSP Shanmuga Priya and DSP Shyamala Devi said Mathivanan had deliberately failed to obtain and verify the details regarding procurement of granites from other district quarries of PRP exports which indulged in large-scale illegal granite quarrying.
Kamaraj, who was former district collector of Madurai, had submitted a false report, deliberately concealing the encroachment and illegal quarrying in the water bodies, despite being aware of the irregularities, they said.
The report also mentioned the seizures made in the houses of the various officials who were involved in the granite scandal including Karmaraj, Mathivanan, Village administrative officers, revenue officials, Mining and Geology department officials and PWD officials.
Meanwhile, SP of Madurai District V Balakrishnan and District collector Anshul Mishra submitted their third report regarding the investigation in the scandal.
A Division Bench of Justice PPS Janardhanara Raja and Justice Vijayaraghavan posted the case for hearing on Oct10.
Earlier counsel for petitioner John Vincent submitted that though the state government was aware of the irregularities from 2009, it had failed to take any action.
Pressing for a CBI probe, he said even after documentary evidence had been given about the illegal quarrying, officials did not take genuine steps to investigate.
Former collector of Madurai U Sahayam had in a report to the state government recently, estimated the losses incurred from illegal granite mining at around Rs 16,000 crore. Son of Union Minister MK Alagiri, Durai Dayanithi, is an accused in the case. He has moved court seeking anticipatory bail.
