Chennai: Even as the nation struggles to come to terms with the shocking gang-rape of a 23-year-old medical student in Delhi, Tamil Nadu government on Tuesday became the first state to initiate measures aimed at curbing rising cases of crimes against women.

As per reports, these measures were announced by state’s Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, while she extended her greetings to the people of the state on the first day of the New Year 2013.

In her message, the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister said that more fast-track courts will be set up in all districts across the state for speedy disposal of cases related to crimes against women.

Similarly on the lines of Delhi, the Tamil Nadu government will also launch a helpline to help women in distress. Among other steps, Jayalalithaa said that more CCTV cameras will be installed at important places to identify criminals who harass women. Besides, police in civilian clothes will be deployed at places where women turn out in large numbers, she said.

"Sexual harassment against women will be considered as a grave crime and will be investigated under the supervision of the senior level police officers. Sexual harassment cases will be viewed by district SPs and range DIG on a monthly basis. All pending cases in court and investigations on sexual harassment and rape cases will be reviewed by top police officials and speed up the process to get justice," a statement by her office said.

In her New Year message, the Chief Minister and the ruling AIADMK chief also called for amendments in existing laws to allow chemical castration for rapists and demanded a death penalty for them.

The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister also assured full assistance to rape victims, saying the state government will bear their medical and other expenses.

The announcement from Tamil Nadu government comes at a time when the entire nation witnessed low-key celebrations to welcome New Year 2013 as a mark of respect to the 23-year-old Delhi braveheart, whose shocking gang-rape stirred the entire nation.

The chemical castration and death penalty for the for rapists as demanded by the political leaders and the leaders of some groups will not in any way solve this issue if one seriously looks into this issue. All the politicians of present day but have passed this type of events in their personal life should think twice that it is not an one sided issue, We should find solutions of ever lasting and result oriented, These crimes have become so common in these days and most of the people in these are political heavy weights and the affluent class and muslemen. The media, the film industry and the industry where these crimes are grown like brothel houses, first class hotels, tourist locations and so on so forth should mend their ways and the government and the politicians should have to decide the checks and balances in these activities, By chemical castration and death penalty we can never be able to solve this issue for ever but will sow hatred and vengance in one gender to another, A day will come when all the young generation will be wiped out thus and the women will find it tough to find a right and straigh forward man as a mat.. The old barbaric days will come in to being. Therefore, let us debate this issued in all forums and decide what is best for solving this issue rather that deciding it in random. May good sense will prevail..

This will add just one more thing...the rapists will have to necessarily kill the victim to ensure no complaining of the crime. I bet on this...more victims will be murdered with more strict punishment.

A 7 th standard girl was raped and murdered before 2 days in Tuticorin district, Tamilnadu.....!!! Now what the politicians, medias and womens organizations are going to do for this ? If it happens in Delhi they are making it big issue, if it happened in any other village, its one out of ten. Shame on Indian medias, government and womens organizations....what Jai lalita are doing on this issue Don`t believe on poltician this is all types of crime happineng due to poltician.better to firest take a hard core action on her on state in this case.
