Chennai: NGO Tamil Maiyam’s founder Father Jegath Gasper Raj on Thursday strongly defended his organisation’s association with the DMK and refuted allegations that they had anything to do with the 2G scam. The NGO was raided by CBI on Wednesday. Karunanidhi’s daughter Kanimozhi is linked to the NGO.
“We are not connected with the 2G spectrum, it is a charitable institution,” said Gasper.
Commenting on DMK chief Karunanidhi’s daughter association with the NGO, he said, “We are deeply pained to know that we are being unfairly targeted because we work with political personalities.” We are greatly thankful to Kanimozhi, he added.
“No diversion of funds from any source to NGO Tamil Maiyam, linked to MP Kanimozhi has been there,” said Jagath Gasper.
“Kanimozhi is just a trustee of Tamil Maiyam nothing more than that. We value our association with her,” Gaspar further said.
What had raised eyebrows is the fact that DMK patron M Karunanidhi’s daughter Kanimozhi is on the Board of Directors of the non-government organisation.
When asked about CBI’s raid, Gasper said, “We cooperated with CBI during the investigations. They wanted to basically see our accounts which we provided them.”
“We have nothing to hide. Our books are clean,” he added.
Reacting to the allegations of being a LTTE sympthaiser, Gasper said, “I am only a sympathiser of the cause of the Tamil people.”
As the NGO is being associated with some politicians we are being unfairly targeted, he said in his defence.
He also questioned the role of the media saying that it was unfair to conduct a trial before hand and declare former Telecom Minister A Raja as guilty in front of the whole nation.
Tamil Maiyam’s founder Father Jegath Gasper Raj is believed to be close to the DMK camp.
Jegath Gaspar Raj, an Indian Tamil has supported Raja and Sri Lanka`s vanquished Tamil Tigers and who is managing trustee of the Tamil Maiyam. The NGO was founded in July 2002.
The spectrum controversy hit the roof following the leak of a large number of Radia`s telephonic intercepts that showed her lobbying for Raja when the Congress was preparing to form a government in May last year.
Wednesday`s raids came days after Parliament`s winter session ended in fiasco in the wake of opposition protests demanding a joint parliamentary probe into the spectrum scam. The government has rejected the demand.
