Karuna flays CPI-M for politicising Brinda Karat visit issue

Chennai: Accusing CPI-M of politicising the
police action relating to the visit of party politburo member
Brinda Karat to a village near Madurai, hit by caste clashes,
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi on Sunday said a probe
would be conducted into the entire issue.

"As per the request made by CPI-M, an inquiry would be
conducted regarding the Uthapuram events," he wrote in DMK
organ `Murasoli` after coming under attack from the Marxist
party, an erstwhile ally, over police action against Karat.

Karat yesterday visited Uthapuram village after initially
being refused permission by police to proceed there, on the
ground that her visit would trigger trouble.

Her car was stopped by police on her way to Uthapuram and
she was taken to a police station. But she was later escorted
by police to the village after she insisted on her visit.
CPI-M claimed she was arrested.

Karunanidhi said CPI-M state committee member P Mohan had
contacted him yesterday after Karat was refused permission and
he had immediately ordered the Madurai Collector to allow
Karat for proceeding to Uthapuram.

"It is unfair for CPI(M) to politicise the whole issue,
concealing the help which I had extended to them," he said.

Dismissing the allegation by CPI(M) that Karat was
prevented from using public address system during a public
meeting at Uthapuram and it could not have happened without
his knowledge, he said he was not aware of it.
