Chennai: DMK chief M Karunanidhi on Saturday sought a "genuine assessment" of the drought-situation in Cauvery Delta region by the Tamil Nadu government, and demanded a relief package for the affected farmers.
Citing reports that `Kuruvai` (short-term) crops had failed due to lack of water besides grim prospects of `Samba` (short-term) crops, he said the Jayalalithaa government should assess the situation.
"The government should carry out a genuine assessment of the drought situation and take steps accordingly and consider extending a relief of Rs 10,000 per acre," among others, he said writing in party organ `Murasoli`.
