Karuna`s native village ecstatic as he steps closer to home

The people of Tirukkuvalai village, the birthplace of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi are ecstatic as the most powerful man in the state has chosen to contest in the April 13 assembly polls from Tiruvarur.

Napattinam: The people of Tirukkuvalai
village, the birthplace of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi are ecstatic as the most powerful man in the state has chosen to contest in the April 13 assembly polls from
Tiruvarur, located just 13 kms from Tirukkuvalai.

Though Tirukkuvalai falls under Kilvelur (SC) constituency
in Nagapattinam district, the people of the village feel that
the Chief Minister has come a step closer to them.

The Chief Minister`s ancestral home, where he was born
to Muthuvelar and Anjugam Ammaiyar on June 3, 1924 is situated
in the heart of the village. The house -- a modest blue and
white structure with a picturesque pond in front of it, now
houses a statue of his mother and two libraries named after
his parents -- `Muthuvelar Noolagam` and `Anjugam Padippagam`.

Many of Karunanidhi`s friends during his boyhood days still
reside in the village. Three persons -- Sadasivam, Thiagarajan
(both retired teachers) and Natarajan (former PWD contractor)
of the village are still in touch with the Chief Minister.

During one of his recent visits to the village, Karunanidhi had a leisurely chat with them and shared anecdotes about his days in the village as a school boy.
Karunanidhi`s affinity for the village is such that
whenever he visits, local people, including old friends and
wards of his contemporaries are allowed to mingle with him
freely.

When the official confirmation came on Thursday evening
following unconfirmed reports prior to the announcement of the
candidates that the Chief Minister would be contesting from
Tiruvarur, the people of the village expressed their joy by
bursting crackers and distributing sweets. They also hope
Karunanidhi will visit the village during his campaigns.
Minister for Dairy Development U Mathivanan, the sitting
MLA of Tiruvarur, has announced that the party cadre would
ensure that the DMK chief wins from Tiruvarur with the biggest
margin of votes in the state. Nagapattinam MP AKS Vijayan,
also the Nagapattinam District Secretary of DMK, has said he
feels "elated" as the Chief Minister was contesting from the
nearby Tiruvarur constituency.
