Lok Sabha members express concern over attack on Tamil TV channel

The issue of attack on the office of a Tamil TV channel in Chennai for airing promos of a debate that questioned the need of 'mangal sutra' was raised in the Lok Sabha on Friday.

New Delhi: The issue of attack on the office of a Tamil TV channel in Chennai for airing promos of a debate that questioned the need of 'mangal sutra' was raised in the Lok Sabha on Friday.

Raising the issue during zero hour, K C Venugopal (Cong) expressed concern over the issue and alleged that some fanatic Hindu organisation was behind the incident.

As Parliamentary Affairs Minister M Venkaiah Naidu objected to the issue being raised saying it was a state subject, Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge backed Venugopal contending rightwing organisations were behind the attack.

P Venugopal (AIADMK), supported by party collegues, also opposed raising of the issue saying it was a state matter. At the same time, he told the House that the state government had taken immediate steps following the attack.

Reports had it that the four attackers on two motorcycles had hurled crude bombs at the tv channel's office at Ekkaduthangal yesterday morning. There was no damage to the office of the Puthiya Thalaimurai TV channel and no one was injured in the attack.
