Chennai: Madras High Court on Wednesday directed the Government to file a counter affidavit within two weeks on relief and rehabilitation measures in Kolliruppu village in Cuddalore District where Dalits were allegedly attacked in November last year.

First Bench comprising Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice M.M. Sundresh gave the direction when a petition by one D.Ashok Kumar, an advocate, came up for hearing and posted the matter to February 23.

Petitioner submitted that around 30 Vanniar community people armed with petrol bombs entered the Dalit colony in the village and set afire seven huts on November 26 last.

He said the victims had lost about Rs.13 lakhs worth of properties and the district administration had not provided any shelter or medical aid as required under the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Rules as amended in 2014.

Hence he prayed the court to direct the district administration to provide shelter, water and other facilities and make arrangements to provide ration cards and other documents which were burnt in the fire, and to get assessed the damage and loss of the properties and to construct new houses to the victims.
