Milk strike in Tamil Nadu enters seventh day

As against an average supply of 1.5 lakh litres of milk a day, the Primary Milk Producers Cooperative Society registered no supply from the milk producers who are demanding a hike.

Erode: The strike called by Tamil Nadu Milk
Producers Welfare Association in Erode demanding increased
procuring price entered its seventh day on Sunday, with
supply-less milk cooperatives wearing a deserted look.

As against an average supply of 1.5 lakh litres of milk a
day, the Primary Milk Producers Cooperative Society registered
no supply from the milk producers who are demanding a hike of
Rs eight per litre for buffalo`s milk and Rs 5 per litre for
cow`s milk.

In some places, the milk producers sold the milk to
private dairies and some in Uzhavar Shandies. Some others
converted the milk into buttermilk or curd and sold them.

The Erode District Milk producers Cooperative Union, which
normally sends more than 60,000 litres of milk daily to
Chennai, has not been able to do the same for the past one
week, due to the strike. The supply of AAVIN milk sachets in the
districts is fast running out and authorities said on Saturday
that they would last only for one or two days more.

Meanwhile the milk producers conducted demonstration at
five places in the district today in areas including Nambiyur
and Gobichettipalayam.
