Coimbatore: In a novel way to show their opposition to acquisition of land for the City airport's expansion, residents of Chinniyampalam Saturday erected gallows and held 'mock hanging' in public.

Some 410 houses are likely to be demolished following the district administration's decision to acquire about 630 acres for the expansion to make the airport an International one. The administration is awaiting approval from the state government.

Opposing the move, the residents had staged protests in different ways and last week hoisted black flags atop their houses.

The residents erected the gallows near a Ganesha temple and some of them 'put a noose around their neck,' symbolising that they had to one day hang themselves if their houses were demolished, police said.

Police personnel were deployed at the spot.
