No hasty decision on reservation for Vanniyars: Karunanidhi

Chief Minister M Karunanidhi today said the state government can not take any "hasty decision" on PMK`s demand for an exclusive 20 per cent reservation for the backward Vanniyar community.

Chennai: Chief Minister M Karunanidhi today
said the state government can not take any "hasty decision" on
PMK`s demand for an exclusive 20 per cent reservation for the
backward Vanniyar community in absence of a caste-based
census.

Supreme Court`s recent interim order on the 69 per cent
reservation in Tamil Nadu does not allow the state to provide
further quota, without a caste-based census, he said in a
statement here.

The court had ruled "if a state wants to exceed 50 per
cent reservation, it is required to base its decision on the
quantifiable data," he said.

For this, the state Backward Classes Commission should
collect statistics, he said, adding only after such a census,
the reservation for every community would be legally valid.

The court verdict did not give the state any room for
exclusive reservation for Vanniyars, he said in response to
PMK founder Dr S Ramadoss` demand.

"If there is any haste in taking a decision on the
subject, it will only aggravate the problem," he said.

Ramadoss had announced his party would soon launch a
statewide agitation if its demand was not accepted by the
state government.
