Normal to near normal rainfall is expected in almost all districts in Tamil Nadu in the coming South West Monsoon, according to an analysis by Tamil Nadu Agricultural University.

Coimbatore: Normal to near normal rainfall is expected in almost all districts in Tamil Nadu in the coming South West Monsoon, according to an analysis by Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU).

The district-level rainfall forecast was developed at the Agro Climate Research Centre in TNAU, based on the Southern Oscillation Index and Sea Surface Temperature values using Australian Rainman International 4.2, it said.

The results of historical data indicated that above normal rainfall (110 per cent of the long-term mean seasonal rainfall) is expected in Virudhunagar and Tuticorin Districts, while below normal rainfall (80 per cent) is expected in Erode, Karur, Madurai, Nagapattinam, Tanjavur, Sivagangai and Tiruppur Districts.

Normal rainfall (91-110 per cent) is expected in Ariyalur, Cuddalore, Dindugul, Namakkal, Kancheepuram, Krishnagiri, Vellore, Thiruvannamalai, Tiruchirapalli, Villupuram, Salem and Tiruvarur districts, whereas near normal rainfall (81-90 per cent) is expected in Coimbatore, Kanyakumari, Chennai, Dharmapuri, Perambalur, Pudukottai, Ramanathapuram, Theni and Tirunelveli districts.

In hilly arreas of NIlgiris district and Dindugul normal rainfall is forecast, while in hIgh rainfall zone of Kanuakumari near normal is expected, it said.

South West Monsoon begins in June and last till September, it said.
