Erode: Pitching for use of nuclear power in Tamil Nadu, Tamil Maanila Congress president GK Vasan on Saturday said both the Central and state governments should explain its benefits to the people and ensure it does not affect the common man.

"Nuclear energy is essential for Tamil Nadu, but at the same time both the Central and state governments should explain the benefits of the same to the people. Such energy systems should not affect the common man," he told reporters.

Vasan was replying to a question on his opinion on anti-nuclear agitations in the state, citing safety reasons.

On the fishermen's issue, he expressed concern over continued attacks on them, allegedly by Sri Lankan naval personnel, even after the newly-elected President of the island nation visited India.

Such attacks should be stopped immediately, he said.

On the functioning of the state Assembly, which saw a walkout yesterday by DMK members about their party chief M Karunanidhi and bedlam on February 19 after a remark by deputy leader of the opposition against the AIADMK supremo, he said its activities now are not upto the desired level.

Proceedings should be conducted for the benefit of the people and proper permission should be given to all opposition parties to represent their views, he said.

Vasan, who was speaking after inaugurating a motorcycle rally to enroll more members into TMC, expressed confidence that the party would achieve its target of recruiting 50 lakh members and claimed many people were volunteering to join it.
