Chennai: Tamil Nadu continued to be a notorious state for road accidents in the country, with 18,188 accidents reported claiming 4,735 lives between January and November last year.

This is higher by 231, as in the corresponding period in 2010, 4,504 lives were lost, according to a data obtained from State Traffic Planning Cell.

"These are only figures who lost their lives in the accident spot. Many more might have lost their lives few days or weeks after accidents. They are not counted in this data," a senior police official said.

"Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh are the states with most number of road accidents every year in the country. Though Maharashtra ranks one in the number of registered vehicles, Tamil Nadu surpasses it in the number of accidents and fatalities," the official said.

Another 1,657 persons were grievously injured, while 20,224 persons suffered simple injuries up to November 30 last year.

The data showed that 9,943 persons were taken to hospital during the golden hour by highway patrol vehicles and 7,862 lives were saved.

A maximum of 5,492 accidents have happened between noon and 6 pm, followed by 5,133 between 6 pm and midnight.

Of the total 1,36,60,717 vehicles registered in Tamil Nadu, a whopping 1,12,07,338 two wheelers (a little over 82 per cent) are two wheelers.
