Panchayat president stabbed following dispute

The president of Veerai panchayat was stabbed and seriously injured on Wednesday following a dispute over irrigating the fields, police said.

Devakottai: The president of Veerai panchayat near here was stabbed and seriously injured on Wednesday following a dispute over irrigating the fields, police said.

They said panchayat president Ravichandran was stabbed several times by one Mahendran after he objected to the latter trying to draw water from the common sources for irrigating his fields and suggested that available water be used.

Ravichdran had previous enmity with Mahendran during the Local body elections, they said.
The panchayat president has been hospitalised and his condition is stated to be serious.
