Chennai: Political leaders in Tamil Nadu, including former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi Thursday condoled the death of renowned Tamil scholar Karthigesu Sivathambi.

"Sivathamby has written more than 70 books and 200 articles which have been well-received among scholars across the world. His demise is an irreparable loss to the Tamil world," Karunanidhi said in a statement here.

He recalled that Sivathamby, a Sri Lankan Tamil, had attended last year's World Classical Tamil Conference at Coimbatore, despite his ill-health and recalled their emotional meeting at the venue at the end of the conference.

The then DMK government had organised the conference.

Hailing Sivathamby for his expertise in Tamil language, Karunanidhi expressed his condolences to Sivathamby's wife Roopavathy and their daughters.

Sivathamby had died in Colombo last night.

MDMK leader Vaiko also condoled the death of the Tamil scholar and hailed him as a great socialist and rationalist.

Recalling his contributions to Tamil literature, Vaiko said Sivathamby's death was a loss to the Tamil world.

PMK founder S Ramadoss also condoled the death of the 79-year-old scholar and expressed 'shock' at his demise.
