Udhagamandalam: Agitated over the suicide of a debt-ridden man here, more than 100 people on Saturday placed his body in front of the house of a financier, whom they alleged drove the deceased to end his life, and demanded his arrest.

Police pacified the agitators, who included activists of Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhakam, and persuaded them to remove the body by assuring to take action if the financier was found guilty.

Police said Halim Seth, running a fancy and woollen shop, owed Rs 30 lakh to the financier by way of loan and interest for the money he had taken for betting on cricket matches but was unable to repay the money.

Unable to bear the "torture" by the financier seeking repayment, Halim ended his life by hanging himself last night in his house.
