Madurai: An engineer of the Public Works
Department has been arrested for allegedly demanding and
accepting a bribe of Rs 20,000 from a contractor for settling
dues owed to him for carrying out desilting work in a tank.
Abdul Rasheed, an executive engineer with the PWD, was
arrested last night at the PWD guest house here while
allegedly accepting the bribe, according to DSP Kalavathi of
Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption.
He was also suspended from service.
Pandian, the contractor, had completed desiling work in a
tank near Koolapandi in the district, Kalavathi said. However,
he had not been paid the sum of Rs four lakh that was owed to
him for completing the task even though dues to others who had
carried out similar works had been settled.
Rasheed had demanded a particular percentage of the sum
owed to Pandian as bribe in order to settle his dues, the DSP
Rasheed was arrested while allegedly receiving chemically
treated currency notes that would register the fingerprint of
the receiver, Kalavathi said.
