Rs 54.17 crore "unaccounted money" seized in TN poll run up: EC

The Election Commmission and the Income Tax Department have seized a total of Rs 54.17 crore "unaccounted money" so far in the run up to the elections in Tamil Nadu, the Election Commission said.



New Delhi: The Election Commmission and the
Income Tax Department have seized a total of Rs 54.17 crore
"unaccounted money" so far in the run up to the elections in
Tamil Nadu, the Election Commission said on Wednesday.

While the EC`s Flying Squad seized a total of Rs 29.87
crore, its surveillance team recovered another Rs 9.24 crore.
The IT department, which is working closely with the EC, also
seized Rs 15.06 crore, EC`s Deputy Election Commissioner J P
Prakash told reporters.
"It is only the beginning of the efforts that the
Commission is making. It may not be the end," he said, adding
that 521 FIRs have been registered in the state and they would
be taken to their logical conclusion.

Asked whether the distribution of cash was unique to
Tamil Nadu, Prakash said, "It is a menace everywhere".
A total of Rs 64.82 lakh in cash were recovered in
Kerala, he added.
