Security drill to check preparedness for terror attack

Tamil Nadu police, Coast Guard and security agencies have launched a drill to check their preparedness in case of a terror attack emanating from the coast.

Chennai: Tamil Nadu police, Coast Guard and security agencies have launched a drill to check their preparedness in case of a terror attack emanating from the coast.

Operation Hamla (attack), the multi-agency drill that began last night, was a review of agencies` preparedness to meet such an eventuality, senior police officials said,
adding, it is expected to continue through the day today.

Post 26/11 terror attacks on Mumbai, which emanated from the seas, the state police and other agencies in Tamil Nadu have been engaging in such exericises and periodic review of their preparedness.

Two such drills, Operation Barricade and Operation Rakshak were held earlier where `terrorists` sneaked into different parts of the state and were `held` by the security
agencies.

With its 1076 km long coastline and proximity to Sri Lanka, the state police have put in place various security measures.
Besides networking with central agencies such as the Coast Guard, Navy and Intelligence Bureau, state police have strengthened the Coastal Security Group with technological
upgradation.

Considering that fishermen are the first line of information, police have been sensitising them on sea-borne attacks and involved them in the previous drills.
A coastal state, Tamil Nadu has vital installations like nuclear power plant at Kalpakkam and the Koodankulam, both located near the sea and sea ports at Chennai and Tuticorin.
