Madurai: Tension prevailed in one area of the city after activists of Muslim organisations pelted stones at a few shops demanding their closure during an agitation called to protest a controversial American movie, deemed offensive to Islam.
The protestors shouted slogans against the US, burnt an American flag and also an effigy of Barack Obama, police said.
A strong police contingent has been posted in the area.
