Striking fishermen withdraw agitation

districts of Tamil Nadu on Sunday decided not to trespass into Sri
Lankan waters and withdrew their five-day old strike to
protest detention of 136 Indian fishermen by the island
The 136 fishermen from Tamil Nadu, detained in Sri Lanka
for allegedly poaching in the island nation`s waters, returned
home on Saturday.
At a meeting of the fishermen panchayats of Nagapattinam
and Karaikal districts here, the community leaders agreed to
exercise "strict self-discipline" and refrain from fishing
in Lankan waters.
It was agreed that fishermen trespassing the Lankan
territory would be slapped with a one-month ban on fishing,
according to the fishermen panchayat.
The need to form a coordination committee between the
fishermen of Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka to solve all problems
amicably was also stressed at the meeting, they said, adding
it was decided to request the Centre to take steps for forming
such a committee.
