Chennai: Expressing concern over the `spurt`
in incidents of kidnapping and murders in Tamil Nadu, AIADMK
chief Jayalalithaa on Wednesday asked the DMK Government to be severe
against the criminals indulging in such cases.

Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, who holds the Home
portfolio, should not adopt a soft approach towards criminals
and instead take severe action against them, she said in a
statement here.
Stating that there had been a spurt in incidents of
murder in the state recently, she expressed shock over the
kidnapping and murder of a Coimbatore-based businessman`s
11-year-old daughter and 7-year-old son last week.

The AIADMK leader asked police to bring to book the
perpetrators and ensure maximum punishment.

Even before people could overcome the shock of Coimbatore
incident, a Chennai-based businessman`s son was kidnapped on
Monday. He was released by the abductors yesterday on payment
of ransom, she pointed out.

These incidents had sent shock waves among parents,
Jayalalithaa said and accused the ruling DMK of acting in a
manner that encouraged criminals.
The state government should realise its responsibility of
protecting the lives and property of the people and maintain
law and order, she said.
