Chennai: Tamil Nadu government has made registration of marriages compulsory, warning of action if it was not done within the stipulated period or if false information was provided.

The Registration Department by a Government Order dated November 24 has made compulsory registration of marriages of persons belonging to various religions in the state under the Tamil Nadu Marriages Registration Rules 2009.

The event, even if registered under different Acts governing the Hindu, Christian and Muslim marriages, "are required to be compulsorily registered," an official press release said.

The persons concerned should send a memorandum along with duly filled forms, witnesses' signature besides that of the priest who solemnised the marriage and proof of age and identity to Registrar of Marriage within 90 days, the release said adding false information or non-registration of marriages will attract punishment.

It is good move from the govt. but beware of touts and the procedure should be easy and clean. i am a victim of this registration and that even in Delhi. i am in Denmark and according to Danish law I should have registerd marriage certificate before I could get my spouse to denmark. I was litterly in tears, no body came to help. The money the touts asked was more then 15000/- rs. Then even I have to go from one place to another, and still no document, the judjes were not in place or the clecrk was sick etc . Sad but I have to take a help from a well known person to get my work done the impact was very bad for us. We have to lie to govt. to get our required documents. Sad but it is true. When will the judicery realise that law is for people not the people for law. law should be easy and clean to get the requirements, not making merely rules help the nation.,
