Tamil Nadu murder case: Left, Dalit groups call for statewide protest

Chennai: Left and Dalit groups in Tamil Nadu on Monday called for a statewide stir on March 16 to protest against the gruesome murder of a Scheduled Caste man for allegedly marrying a girl from the upper caste.

According to a media report, Left and Dalit organisations would stage demonstrations in different parts of the state on March 16.

In a case of honour killing last Sunday, a 23-year-old Dalit man was hacked to death by three assailants at a busy marketplace in broad daylight at Tirupur.

The victim, identified as V Sankar, had married 19-year-old Kausalya some eight months ago against her parents' wishes.

The motorcycle-borne assailants also attacked Kausalya who has since been admitted to a hospital where she is recuperating.

The attack has once again highlighted the scourge of casteism that is still prevalent in the country, despite progress in the education and economic front.
