Tiruchirappalli: Thanjavur Tamil University
has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Archaeological
survey of India, Mysore, to digitize more than one lakh
estempages (inscriptions) in all languages.
University Vice Chancellor M Rajendran said the branch had
estempages of inscriptions from 1887 and those collected till
1908 had been published. "Inscriptions collected from 1909
will be digitized," he said.
Of the more than one lakh estempages, 65,000 are in Tamil
and throw light on Tamil history and culture. "Estempages
would help know even if the original inscriptions are lost.
Digitizing will help researchers in a big way” he said.
Rajendran said Chief Minister M Karunanidhi had sanctioned
Rs 24 lakh to the university for the work.
The MoU was signed by Rajendran and ASI Director in charge
Ravishankar here yesterday in the presence of the Chief
Minister.
