Madurai: In the second such incident in six
months in the district, a low intensity time-bomb packed in a
tiffin-box and placed in a bus, was on Wednesday recovered near
Thiruvathavur, after it was thrown out by the crew
when a passenger alerted them.

Two unidentified youths had placed the bomb under a seat
of the Madurai-bound bus around 7 am and it had been timed to
explode at 12 noon, a top police official, who visited the
spot, said.

"Though it was not a high intensity bomb, it had been
made meticulously with right wire connections, with four 1.5
volt batteries attached to it," the official said.

The bomb was noticed by a bus passenger, a Sri Lankan
Tamil refugee, who informed the crew, and alerted other
passengers also.

The passengers alighted immediately. The crew threw the
bomb into a pond and informed the Bus Depot Manager at Melur
who advised them to report to police and then proceed on their
journey.

The bomb was later defused by bomb disposal experts.
Experts said the bomb was not very powerful, but made in
a sophisticated way.

Six months ago a bomb planted in a city bus was noticed
by the staff at Pudur Depot here and removed.
