TN Governor, CM extend independence day greetings

Tamil Nadu Governor K Rosaiah and Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Tuesday extended their Independence day greetings to the people.

Chennai: Tamil Nadu Governor K Rosaiah and Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Tuesday extended their Independence day greetings to the people.
"May this historic day rekindle in us the spirit of oneness and patriotic fervor. Let us draw the inspiration from our great leaders of our nation`s freedom movement and join hands to dedicate ourselves to build a stronger and progressive India," Rosaiah said in a Raj Bhavan statement while extending his greetings.

Jayalalithaa said a society overcoming differences pertaining to caste and religion among others signified true independence.

"We all are aware of the untold miseries suffered at the hands of the (erstwhile) British rulers and therefore it is our duty to protect the freedom achieved by the sufferings of many," she said in an official statement.

The whole world was in awe over the unity in diversity in the country and the sacrifices made by the freedom fighters to ensure an Independent India, she added.

The Chief Minister said her government was doing its best to honour freedom fighters and those who had strived for social upliftment, saying memorials are being established in their honour.
