Chennai: The state government on Monday launched the free bus pass scheme for the current academic year, expected to benefit over 27 lakh school and government
college students across Tamil Nadu.

Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa launched the scheme for the 2011-12 academic year, which would be implemented at a cost of Rs 303.84 crore, a government release here said.

She gave away passes to seven students from seven different schools in the city, the release said, adding the number of beneficiaries had increased from 26.3 lakh students to 27.2 lakh students this year.

Jayalalithaa also presented a sum of Rs one lakh each to
the relatives of three fishermen who went missing after they
put out to sea on May 17, a release said.
