TN orders 3,000 buses to replace old ones

Chennai: In a bid to upgrade the state's bus fleet involved in public transport, Tamil Nadu government on Wednesday ordered buying of 3,000 new buses to replace the old ones.

The new ones will replace buses that are either six years old or have completed 7 lakh km, an official release said. In its first phase of the upgradation, the government allocated Rs 75.36 crore to government transport corporations to buy 520 buses.

In order to utilise the engines that are in good condition in old buses, the government will also renovate 1,432 buses at a cost of Rs 94.58 crore. Tamil Nadu government runs 21,169 buses that carry on board 2.10 crore passengers in the state and 55 lakh passengers in the city every day.
