TN rubbishes Kerala`s concerns on Mullaperiyar dam maintenance

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi Saturday said there was nothing new in the state carrying out maintenance works on Mullaperiar dam and he saw no reason why Kerala was opposed to it.

Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi Saturday
said there was nothing new in the state carrying out
maintenance works on Mullaperiar dam and he saw no reason why
Kerala was opposed to it.

"The Supreme Court has made it clear that Tamil Nadu can
carry routine maintenance work. On that basis, it’s usual for
the state to carry out works," the DMK president said in the
party mouthpiece `Murasoli`.

His comments came against the backdrop of Kerala Water
Resources Minister NK Premachandran, expressing resentment
over the maintenance work on the dam.

Karunanidhi said Premachandran`s reaction was "wrong" and
asserted that the works undertaken were not new.

Kerala had expressed concern over Tamil Nadu carrying out
maintenance work ahead of the visit of the Supreme Court
appointed empowered committee to examine the safety of the
114-year-old structure.

Premachandran had alleged that it appeared to be a
strategy by Tamil Nadu to establish its stand that the dam was
not unsafe.
