Mumbai: The European Organisation for Nuclear
Research (CERN) wants participation of more Indian experts,
including scientists, for conducting various experiments at
its recently commissioned Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in
Geneva, Director General Prof Rolf-Dieter Heur said today.
A meeting will be held with officials of the Atomic
energy Commission and other expert bodies next month to
discuss the availability of Indian manpower, he told reporters
here.
"There is a huge demand for expertise for LHC programmes
which are expected to re-start in mid-February. CERN expects
large participation of Indian experts in ongoing experiments,
grid computation as well as data analysis on a continuous
basis," Heur, who is here to attend a two-day meet of Funding
Agencies for large Colliders (FALC), said.
Despite initial hiccups, experiments conducted at the LHC
have been successful. The data collected during the four-day
experiment done in November gave scientists a lot of
confidence, he said.
"In February we will begin new experiments with 7 TeV
(3.5 plus 3.5 TeV) energy. By 2012 we expect to reach its full
energy level and find some expected results on dark matters in
the next three to four years," Heur said.
"I had a discussion with Atomic energy Commission
chairman Dr Srikumar Banerjee for increasing scientific man
power for LHC and we will meet again next month," he said.
He pointed out that currently 200 Indian nationals and
100 scientists from the country are taking part in the
experiments but "we need more".
