Government steps in for more Hindi on computers New Delhi: Those who prefer to use Hindi over other languages can rejoice. The government has requested Indian and international IT giants to prioritise developing software that will facilitate its use on computers as easily as English.

Minister of State for Home Ajay Maken made this request to the representatives of IT giants Microsoft Corporation, International Business Machines (IBM) and Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) in a meeting convened Thursday, said a home ministry release Friday.

It said the meeting had been convened to examine the availability of various software, aiding and abetting the use of Hindi on computers and their shortcomings besides user expectations from this software.

The meeting was convened two days after the country celebrated Hindi Diwas Sep 14 to commemorate the day Hindi was declared the country's official language in 1949 by the Constituent Assembly - set up to draft the country's constitution after independence.

The meeting was convened to examine a report on how information technology could facilitate the use of Hindi by the masses and in government offices, submitted by one of the three panels set up by Maken.
