Innovations by IITians to be on display Saturday New Delhi: An alarm that will alert you to bad body posture, a low cost Barille display to help the visually challenged, an industrial robot and many other innovations by IITians will be showcased in an open-house on Saturday.

Around 400 projects by 1,000 IIT students will be on display for public, especially school children and industry people, during 'I2Tech' which coincides with the institute's golden jubilee celebrations.

"Last year 2,000 school students and IIT aspirants visited our campus. I hope the this year public participation will be more. We are also expecting over 1,000 people of industries and around 12 firms will formally interact with our students during the open house," IIT-Delhi Director Surendra Prasad said.

On display will also be IIT's top 50 contribution in technology such as 'Ferrite Phase Shifter' widely used by defence in radar operations, Fru wash technology used to transport unrefrigerated fresh vegetable and fruits by forming an organic coat over it and axle counter for automatic signalling in railways.

Prasad, while noting IIT's last year achievements, said a centre for nanofabrication and nano-devices, costing around Rs 50 crore, will soon come up in the campus that will focus on developing non-silicon nano devices, unlike the silicon-based developed in centres at IISc Bangalore and IIT-Mumbai.

He said last year 24 new faculty joined the institute. However, the institute is still 118 short of total sanctioned positions of 578.

IIT has also taken up three projects with firms like Pepsi Co (innovation), Shell (engineering) and Indus Towers (promoted by telecom majors AirTel and Idea). The institute has also approved 44 works last year for patents, he said.
