London: If you're tired of your smartphone's battery draining out a little too fast, you may soon find a reason to smile - manufacturers are planning to change the memory type of smartphones, extending their battery life by up to 20 percent.
Samsung is already in the process of producing memory modules built of phase change material.
These modules are made of a substance that records or erases data when it is heated and use far less power than existing handsets.
Samsung will produce phase change memory (PCM) chips in the same format as existing designs so they can easily be worked into production runs, reports the BBC.
The most widely used form of PCM is usually made from an alloy of germanium, antimony and titanium.
Heating it using a voltage makes the material turn into two separate forms that are resistant to electricity very uniquely from each other.
Consequently, the material can be used to represent the binary 0s and 1s used by computers.
Samsung eventually expects PCM to replace flash memory in many gadgets.
