Puducherry: There is a sharp fall in occurrence of crimes, including heinous offences, in Puducherry Union Territory during 2014 as against what was seen earlier, a top police officials said on Wednesday.
IG of Police, Praveer Ranjan, told reporters that he would only appeal to political parties and others who were seen issuing statements criticising the "police machinery as having failed to maintain law and order" to desist from making "off the cuff statements" without seeing the reality of the crime scenario and police action.
Furnishing statistics relating to crimes and offences over the last nearly ten years and comparing the crime scenario with the current year`s picture, he said that intensive monitoring and effective action taken by the police had been the main cause of fall in crime rate during this year ending November 25.
Praveer Ranjan said the department had initiated steps to launch new facilities soon for the people to register their complaints on line. "We would also have the facility to track the action taken on the complaints registered", he said, adding, the police department was inclined to be "people friendly and social media friendly".
Already policemen were deployed at various centres to regulate traffic and to prevent motor vehicle accidents, the IG said and sought the co-operation of the people to ensure that there was still greater improvement in enforcement of measures in the larger interest of the people.
It had been seen that in some of the cases of murder the accused had engaged themselves in gang rivalry to settle scores among themselves, Praveer Ranjan said.
"Past enmity, business related disputes and a long standing rivalry among the groups involved in the occurrence of crimes had been the chief cause of the murders", he said.
