Puducherry: Opposition leader in the Puducherry Assembly and former chief minister V Vaithilingam was on Thursday arrested along with other Congress workers when they blocked road traffic demanding that government cancel license for a liquor shop to run business on the main thoroughfare.

The protesters squatted on the road shouting slogans against the Rangasamy-led AINRC government for "permitting" liquor shops to come up on important and busy thoroughfares.

Some 100 congress workers were arrested, police said.

The Congress committee here had objected to the functioning of the shop on the bus thoroughfare which, it said, was a violation of a Supreme Court order that no liquor shop should come up on the main and busy thoroughfares.
