‘Jarawa community willing to join the mainstream’

Port Blair: The members of Jarawa community are willing to come to the mainstream and embrace modern lifestyle, a local MP has said.

"It would not be appropriate to suppress the voice of the community and leave them in total isolation," Bishnu Pada Ray told a press meet here yesterday.

"A parliamentary standing committee has already recommended review of policy for the primitive tribe of Andaman and Nicobar Islands to facilitate a "slow and smooth" transition. But this would have to be done with minimum damage to the members of the tribe and their cultural heritage," he said.

The Jarawa are one of the indigenous people of Andaman Islands. Their present numbers are estimated at between 250-400 individuals.

What the officials of the Andamans want is for the Jarawa to become `mainstream` so they can do what they did to the Onge and moved them into a small reservation and take the rest of their land. The Indian officials in Andaman areas are as corrupt as anywhere else. The Ung (Jarawa) should be left alone.Tghe kickbacks receievd from timber would be enourmous. The best idea is to shift all Indians back to the mainland where the settlers ancestors came from as convicts and let the country revert back to it`s original state which it would in about 80 years. No Indian should even be on those islands.

This is a misleading report from the Andaman MP. None of the expert groups or individuals who have worked closely with the Jarawa report a willingness to `Come to the mainstream and embrace modern life`. His comments may be based on encounters with a few Jarawa who have chosen to spend time on the illegal road which cuts through their reserve, they do not reflect the view of the majority of the Jarawa who continue to live their way of life in their forest home.
