Puducherry: Chief Minister V.Vaithilingam has said a monitoring committee would be formed to supervise the implementation of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) in the Union Territory.

Rebutting the criticisms of the opposition during question time in the Assembly today that there was no proper implementation of the scheme, he said the scheme was covering one member in a family by ensuring 100 days work to improve the infrastructures in the rural areas.

There was also a proposal to increase the wages from present Rs 80 to Rs 100 per day under the scheme.

N.Kalainathan (CPI) alleged that although as many as 76,951 persons had their names registered under the scheme only 48,182 persons had benefitted through wage employment.

Local Administration Minister A Namassivayam said the scheme was providing jobs without letup with the department taking up specific projects. He told the House that ever since the scheme was implemented in 2008 as much as Rs 8.34 crores had been disbursed as wages.
