Puducherry: All privately operated interstate and intra state buses went off the roads in Puducherry
today in response to the dawn to dusk bandh called by the
opposition AIADMK to urge the Centre to support the US
sponsored resolution against Sri Lanka at the ongoing meeting
of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva.

The bandh was also aimed at criticising the `sustained
silence` the AINRC headed government in Puducherry was
maintaining on the Sri Lankan issue.

Autos, tempos and privately run transport services were off
the roads.

The government owned buses however operated under tight
police security and were carrying large number of passengers.

All shops and establishments in key centres remained
closed and most of the private educational institutions
declared holiday for the day.

Although hospitals functioned the turnout of patients was
less than the usual strength. Police pickets were deployed at
vulnerable centres. Police sources told PTC that a Puducherry
government owned town bus was stoned when it was proceeding to
Chennai at Muthialpet on the outskirts of Puducherry. None was
however injured, the police sources said.
