Lucknow: Sixteen people were arrested during raids by Food and Drug Authority in 10 districts of Uttar Pradesh against unauthorised sale and use of Oxytocin, a senior officer said here.
As many as 16 people, including milkmen were arrested and 80,000 vials of Oxytocin were recovered during raids by FDA teams yesterday, Deputy Inspector General of the authority Hariram Sharma said.
He said the raids were conducted at dairies, general stores and medical stores and syringes used to inject the hormone in cattle were collected.
Sharma said FDA would invoke the Cruelty to Animals Act on those people who inject oxytocin injections in animals.
Oxytocin is injected in cows and buffaloes to induce more lactation, though it reduces their life span and creates hormone disorders in consumers. It is banned under schedule H of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act.
