Bulandshahr: With the expiry of loan waiver scheme announced by UP Government for farmers, banks have declared 17,500 farmers of district as defaulters.
They owe Rs 83 crore to banks and other financial institutions, according to figures.
As per the norms, only loanees who mortgaged their land and got upto Rs 50,000 loan were covered under the scheme, and that too under the condition that 10 percent of the loan amount was deposited by them in time. Farmers availing higher amount were ineligible.
There are 13,796 farmers fulfilling this condition.
Meanwhile, general secretary of UP Unit of Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU), Mange Ram Tyagi, said farmers were facing problems due to untimely supply of fertilisers during rabi sowing, improper canal water supply roaster and uncertain power supply.
Added to misery of farmers is huge sugarcane arrears against four sugar mills of district, he added.
According to the District Sugarcane Officer, a sum of Rs 98.14 crore is due to four sugarcane mills against sugarcane supplied by farmers.
