Six more persons died in different parts of Uttar Pradesh due to extremely cold conditions as mercury dipped sharply at a number of places, taking the death toll in the state to 68 this winter.

While three persons died in Shahjahanpur district, two
deaths were reported from Bareilly and one from Basti district
in the last 24 hours, official sources said here.
A cold wave continued to prevail in most parts of the
state, Met department sources said, adding that it was a foggy
day in most of the areas.

The weather was mainly dry all over the state and the
night temperature was markedly below normal in Varanasi,
Faizabad, Allahabad and Jhansi divisions.

The temperature was appreciably below normal in
Gorakhpur, Kanpur, Lucknow, Bareilly, Agra and Meerut
divisions.

The lowest temperature in the state was 1.4 degree
Celsius recorded in Sultanpur, which was eight notches below
normal, and Fursatganj.
Lucknow recorded a minimum of 3.8 deg C, which was
three degrees below normal, whereas Varanasi recorded a
minimum of 4.1 deg C, four notches below normal.

In Bareilly, the minimum temperature was 5.4 deg C, three
degrees below normal and in Gorakhpur it was 5.3 deg C, four
degrees below normal.

The Met officer that foggy conditions would continue and
the weather would remain mainly dry.
