Lucknow: As many as 79 sugar mills have started operating in Uttar Pradesh after UP Sugar Mills Association announced to hike incentive on sugarcane to Rs 25 per quintal, official sources said here on Thursday.

"With the deadlock between mills and farmers coming to an end, as many as 79 units were crushing cane till last night. More mills are likely to start functioning in a couple of days," a senior cane department official said.

The UPSMA had yesterday announced to pay an incentive of Rs 25 per quintal to farmers, over state advisory price of Rs 160-170 announced by the government.

Mills, which have started operating, include 61 private units, 15 from the cooperative sugar factories federation (UPCSFF) and three from the state sugar corporation (UPSSCL).

At present there are 157 mills in the state, including 93 in private sector, 33 of UPSSCL, 28 of UPCSFF and three of the Central government.

"Of these 128, including 92 private, 25 cooperative and 11 of corporation are functional this year," he added.
